Kids with Wiki

I was always curious to know about how would kids react when they realize that Wikipedia can be edited by them as well. Because Wikipedia has been the key to create an alternate way for Kids to reach out to information. It has made them be more creative and to learn in their own way.  Shivu & I were always discussing on how to make this happen since very long. It was a perfect timing when Shivu met Prof. Y. C. Kamala from The National Degree College in one of the Wiki Workshop and pitched the idea of reaching out to kids to make them learn more about Wikipedia. We were so glad that she liked the idea and made it to happen as part of Bangalore Science Forum which was dedicated to create programs for kids. Then we were all set for the event which was first of its kind in the garden city.

The event started with a brief introduction of the forum (Bangalore Science Forum) by Prof. Kamala followed by the agenda. We were happy to have Murali H.R, Cyclist, curator of “Namma Cycle” during the event for assisting kids. We all gathered in Computers labs and had a quick check on Computers, Internet connection, etc. Kids were really excited to listen to what is stored for them to listen in next few minutes. Shivu started with a story and got into Wikipedia webpage to find more about a character in the story. We walked through starting from creating user to different phases of editing, tracking, adding comments, tracking, etc. Students were popping up with too many questions than expected and it was fun answering to them. The event was concluded with joyous kids opened to the world of Wikipedia.
